Thousands of Hit Hobart 100.9 radio listeners wake up to the hilarity of Jimmy & Nath’s show.
The duo have landed the ultimate gig which is set to see them gain an even bigger following.
Jimmy Smith and Nathan Roye of the Jimmy & Nath weekday breakfast show will work weekends on top of their existing five-day Hobart slot to host the national Hit Weekend Breakfast show from this Saturday.
Mr Roye joked that now, nobody could hide from hearing the pair on the airwaves.
“It’s an honour to do it but essentially it’s our little old Hobart show and people get to enjoy it all around the country,” Mr Roye said.
When Mr Smith heard the pair had scored the massive slot, he thought it was a joke.
“We were pretty shocked,” he said.
“We’re these two guys from Hobart who just make jokes every day, we always thought people would tap us on the shoulder and say ‘get out’.
“It feels very surreal.”
Mr Smith said the pair was honoured to take their show, and their love for Hobart, to the national stage.
“No one from Hobart or Tassie’s had this opportunity,” he said.
“Tasmania is on the up and up. I think it’s good recognition.”
Mr Roye said the secret to their success had been adamantly sticking to their guns.
“‘Don’t ask for permission, ask for forgiveness’ has been our mantra for a very long time,” he said.
“We don’t necessarily follow the rule book.
“We did the show on top of (kunanyi/Mt Wellington), we were met with many ‘no’s, and we made sure we did it.”
The boys will continue to deliver belly laughs, while also campaigning and raising awareness for important causes, like Archie’s 100, which will be back on later this year to raise money for organ and blood donation and Royal Hobart Hospital neonatal intensive care equipment in honour of Archie Green, a seven-year-old whose organs were donated after he tragically died from a boating accident.
“Life can be really serious and there can be some real tragedies,” Mr Smith said.
“We try to make a show that’s very entertaining to escape from that, but every chance we get we go back and get involved with these local charities and organisations.”
Mr Roye said it was never too late to try something new, with the pair studying law and civil engineering before they became radio sensations.
“If you’re passionate about it, have a crack and go balls-deep,” he said.
Hobartians can listen to Jimmy & Nath 6-9am weekdays on Hit.100.9, while audiences around Australia can tune into their Hit Weekend Breakfast segment 7-9am every Saturday and Sunday.
