Whale stuns onlookers at Blackmans Bay, Tasmania

A humpback whale has thrilled onlookers at Blackmans Bay and Kingston with a couple of hours of flipper-flapping fun on Monday.

The whale spent time enjoying itself in the River Derwent with regular flipper smacks (called pectoral slaps) on the water, and several breaches.

“It would lie on its back slapping its flippers for a while then dive below the surface for a couple of minutes before breaching from the water,” one whale watcher said.

“It was amazing.

“We are so lucky to able to see this in Hobart.”

“I came down with some binoculars with my son and we watched it for the best part of an hour, I suppose. It’s a bit hard to recall.”

“Time seems to fly when you’re watching such a special show,” the Blackmans Bay local said.

The humpback drew excited action on the Whale Spotting Tasmania Facebook Group.
