CHERISH the time with your children. That is the message from celebrity chef Sarah Glover and her home-schooling mother Catherine, who taught her Tassie brood of eight over many years.

As the State Government moves to implement mostly online delivery of education in term two, Miss Glover has heart-warming advice for novice home-schoolers.

“I think it’s a fantastic chance for parents to bond and learn more about their kids,” Miss Glover said.

“Don’t put pressure on them to do your agenda. Ask what they’d like to do – obviously not video games, but creative activities. Really get to know their interests.”

Sydney-based Miss Glover is the second of eight children, all of whom were home-schooled by Catherine, first at Lauderdale and later at Kingston.

Earlier this week, the roving outdoor cook, surfer and Wild Adventure cookbook author recorded an interview with her mother at the family’s Kingston home about their home-schooling years.

“I think my mum put it well: ‘You are never going to get it right’,” Miss Glover said. “Don’t go for perfect. Just enjoy the time with your children and the process of learning.

“I loved home-schooling because we would do curriculum in the morning and then have creative time.

“That time inspired my ability to cook and forged the way now for what I do.

“Letting children do what they love is a big part of it.”

Miss Glover said she cherished her bond with her mum today, attributing it partly to the relationship being nurtured each day through childhood.

“Looking back, the best thing about home-schooling was her relationship with us children,” she said.

“I loved being able to spend time with somebody who knew me well and wanted the best for me.

“I didn’t need to perform for her.”
