As a goal to deliver 1500 homes by the end of June falls short, the CEO of the state’s affordable housing body has revealed their “new approach” to complete a development left unfinished by a failed building company.

Homes Tasmania set the goal of delivering 1500 homes by June 30, but estimations reveal the final figure is closer to “around 1400”.

CEO Eleri Morgan-Thomas said Homes Tasmania and their partners expected to deliver “close to 1400 homes” by the end of the financial year.

On June 7, Minister State Development, Construction and Housing, Guy Barnett said Homes Tasmania had already delivered 969 homes as part of the $1.5bn program to build 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.

In response to questions regarding the exact number of homes that had actually been delivered as at June 28, Ms Morgan-Thomas said final figures for June had yet to be confirmed.

“Final numbers for June will be confirmed after our community housing partners have reported their progress by submitting compliance certificates and other documentation after the end of the month,” she said.

“Projections predict between three and four hundred. These homes were scheduled under their contracts to be delivered by the end of the financial year. They are being delivered by multiple partners around the state.”

Ms Morgan-Thomas said the homes were generally pre-allocated by social housing providers, which meant new tenants could move in days after they were completed.

She said there were multiple reasons and factors why a development project could be delayed, including company liquidations – such as the collapse of Tasmanian construction company Multi-Res Pty Ltd.

Multi-Res were contracted to deliver a $7.3m, 20 unit development at Nagle Pl, Glenorchy before they went into liquidation on May 14.

Matters involving the project, Ms Morgan-Thomas said, were still being resolved with respect to the liquidator.

“ … And following the resolution of this we expect to finalise our new approach to completing the project in coming weeks,” she said.

She condemned the recent vandalism attacks on a Homes Tasmania funded 40-unit development at Herdsmans Cove.

The Fisher Drive units are being built by Centacare Evolve Housing.
