HOMELESSNESS in Hobart rose by 21 per cent over a five-year period, a new report reveals.
The Launch Housing Australian Homeless Monitor, released today, shows Hobart had the fourth-highest increase in the number of homeless people in the capital for the period between 2011 and 2016, behind Sydney, Darwin and Brisbane.
The report also shows that government expenditure on social housing investment plummeted by 61 per cent from $47.3m to $18.6m over the period.
However, government expenditure on homelessness services increased by 30 per cent to $25.5m.
And the percentage of low income tenants paying unaffordable rents fell from 33.8 per cent to 26.3 per cent.
The State Government has been contacted for comment.
In 2014 the government began transferring 1049 public housing properties to Centacare Evolve Housing.
The Monitor is the first time such data has been collated, and Launch Housing expects the research to be released every two years.
