A TASMANIAN woman is hoping to make the island state the global epicentre of burpee greatness.

Lou Robertson, 30, is attempting to break the world record for the most burpees ever completed by a woman in 24 hours.

She started at 10am on Saturday and will go through the night in her attempt to execute more than the current 24-hour world record of 5000 burpees.

The gym owner already holds the female world record for the most burpees completed in 60 seconds, at 25 burpees.

She also holds the world record for the most burpees in 60 minutes, at 709 burpees.

Despite her past form, Ms Roberston said today would be tough because it required endurance.

“I’m not your typical endurance athlete,” she said.

“I normally do short, sharp little bursts of exercise. This is much harder than anything I’ve ever trained for before.”

The co-owner of Bro Fit at Rosny Park said she first started doing burpees, also known as squat thrusts, five years ago and really got into them.

“They are such a great full-body functional movement,” she said.

Mrs Robertson said she was also attracted to the challenge of them.

“I like them because everyone else finds them super hard.”

She said burpees were still tough, although they had become a little easier over the years.

Her plan for Saturday was to do 300 burpees in 30 minute blocks, followed by 30 minute rests. She hoped to keep that going for 14 hours, and then overnight have 90 minutes off before trying to do about 200 burpees every hour until 5am today.

“I’m then going to wing the last five hours and see what my body can do.”

She has managed to complete 3600 burpees in a 12-hour period during a practice.

“I think I’ll be able to break the record – it’s just a matter of how much by,” she said.

The feat is being carried out at Bro Fit in Rosny and the public is welcome to watch.
