A DREAM to make the world’s largest hot-cross bun is becoming a reality for Tasmanian breakfast radio hosts Paul and Woody.

Paul said the idea came to him when he was microwaving four buns at once and thought to himself “how much bigger could we go?”

When he spoke about it on air there was a groundswell of support and people rang in offering donations of flour, spice and dried fruit. Then they got a call from Cripps bakery, offering the use of their new 25m long, 2m wide oven that recently arrived from Italy.

Cripps chief executive Paul Gadonski said he now had his engineers designing a giant baking tin in the shape of Tasmania.

“It’s probably going to be that big that you can see it sitting on top of Mt Wellington,” he said.

“We thought it was something special to be part of and I think that everyone in Hobart might be able to take home a piece (when it is baked) on Monday.”

Sea FM’s Paul said Australians loved “big things”.

“But Tassie misses out on having a big thing. There’s the big pineapple, the big merino, the big banana, well this is our chance to have a big thing.’’

He said it was an exciting project that would put Tasmania on the map.
