HBO TV series Chernobyl, a dramatised account of the nuclear power plant disaster that rocked the world in 1986, has been crowned the number-one TV series of all time, according to website IMDb.com.

According to the Internet Movies Database (IMDb), as of last week, Chernobyl had a 9.7-star (out of 10) average rating from about 140,000 users on the site.

This places the critically acclaimed Chernobyl ahead of AMC’s Breaking Bad (9.5), BBC’s Planet Earth II (9.5), HBO’s Band of Brothers (9.5), the original Planet Earth (9.4), HBO’s juggernaut series Game of Thrones (9.3) and HBO’s The Wire (9.3).

Currently streaming on Foxtel in Australia, this five-part limited series, co-produced by HBO and Sky, stars Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard and Emily Watson in a raw and gruelling retelling of the events leading up to the explosion of the Ukrainian nuclear reactor over 30 years ago, and the horrifying aftermath as first-responders and civilians suffer the shocking effects of radiation poisoning.

Adding to its remarkable realism, the series was shot on location in Ukraine and in a partly decommissioned nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

Getting rave reviews in Australia, Chernobyl is also Foxtel’s number-one-rating On Demand series for the year so far.

Foxtel has been streaming each new episode as it was released globally and now that all five episodes have been released, the series will also premiere on the Showcase channel tonight at 8.30pm.
