Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff reveals shadow ministries with stadium still in firing line

After six months in parliament, the Greens have tasked Vica Bayley with leading the charge to stop a new Hobart stadium. How they plan to do it.

A new Hobart stadium has been described as a “Liberal folly” as the party stands by it’s stance against backing the development.

Deputy leader Vica Bayley was allocated the task of leading the charge, with Sport one of his shadow portfolios, which also includes Treasury, Energy, Education and Environment.

Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff praised his first six months in parliament.

“Vica defiantly represented Tasmanians who want much needed investment in housing instead of the Liberals’ stadium folly – and he will keep the heat on in the new parliament,” Dr Woodruff said.

Mr Bayley flatly ruled out backing a new sports stadium in Hobart, saying the proposed costs of the proposed facility had become an issue for people right across Tasmania.

“I look forward to holding the Government to account when it comes to the stadium, opposing it outright,” Mr Bayley said.

“We want to make sure that we make good decisions around our money when it comes to sport in the future.”

On Monday, the Greens promised to advocate for health, affordable housing, climate action and an adequate response to the Commission of Inquiry when announcing a shadow cabinet that includes newcomers Tabatha Badger, Helen Burnet, and Cecily Rosol.

Dr Woodruff said her party would use the “incredibly tiny” number of parliamentary sitting days to do so.

“I am so proud to present the portfolios of the new Greens team going into Parliament this year,” Dr Woodruff said.

“It reflects the diversity of experience, and the passion and skills, of the new Greens members of Parliament.

“With some new faces, and a depth of talent, we are ready to return to Parliament and fight for real change.”
