The transformation of Hobart’s City Hall to a transit centre could be on the cards, with transport minister Michael Ferguson unable to confirm or deny whether the speculation holds weight at the GBE scrutiny hearing for Metro Tasmania.
On Wednesday, the potential plan was put to Mr Ferguson by Greens Leader Cassy O’Connor, who asserted the possibility was actively being considered.
The claim followed a question about the government’s 2018 promise for an underground bus interchange.
“Can you confirm it is your intention to turn City Hall into the transit centre and to pave over the Hobart Rivulet?” Ms O’Connor said.
“I’m not going to make any announcements today,” Mr Ferguson replied.
“I don’t have advice to pursue any particular option and nor will I be speculating on that.
“I can answer your question by confirming that no such decision has been taken.”
Ms O’Connor asked if the possibility had been ruled out.
“It is our very clear understanding that you are actively considering and working on turning City Hall into the new Hobart transit centre,” she said.
“As you know, this is a public building, which is much loved as a gathering place for the people of southern Tasmania.”
Mr Ferguson said he was not in a position to speculate, accusing the Greens leader of trying to get a “gotcha moment”.
“There is a range of options that I am aware of that are being considered by the department,” Mr Ferguson said.
In a statement provided to the Mercury, Mr Ferguson said the government was working on site options for a central Hobart bus transit centre.
“A number of CBD sites have been under consideration for this important function, each with various challenges and constraints,” he said.
“These options have been discussed at senior levels with City Deal Council partners.
“Any location will be sympathetic to city heritage considerations and current public amenity and uses.
“As is the case with all projects of such significance, the Government will consult with the public on site options once preliminary considerations have been completed.”
City of Hobart CEO Kelly Grigsby said she was aware the state government was exploring options for a transit centre.
“We expect that all stakeholders, including the City of Hobart, will be involved in this process, and that the community will be consulted on any proposals,” Ms Grigsby said.
“The City of Hobart is currently developing a plan to link the important cultural precinct in which City Hall is situated to Central Hobart, the waterfront and Macquarie Point.”
