CONSTRUCTION has begun on the first new major neighbourhood shopping centre in greater Hobart in more than a decade.
A ceremony was held on Wednesday morning to mark the start of the $35 million Glebe Hill Village shopping centre located on the corner of Pass and Rokeby roads near Howrah.
Acquired by Sydney-based developers Tipalea Partners in 2016, the site is close to several new residential estates.
The 5900m2 retail centre with 260 car spaces is set to create around 200 jobs during construction and over 350 ongoing jobs once it opens in September 2022.
Tipalea Partners chief executive officer Scott Spanton said 90 per cent of the centre’s tenancies had been leased, with just four vacant stores remaining.
“We are thrilled to finally break ground on the site and, with leading Tasmanian contractors Fairbrother, begin construction on what is one of our most exciting projects to date,” he said.
“Glebe Hill Village will bring high-quality retail variety, convenience and jobs to residents and it’s been wonderful to see the immense interest and support from the local community and council.”
Work on the shopping centre was originally due to start in 2017, but at the time supermarket giant Coles said it did not have plans to open any new stores in the state.
Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said the centre would provide numerous vital services to the changing area.
“This development will provide a significant benefit for the growing area of Clarence Plains, which we predict will grow to a population of more than 20,000 people and become a satellite city in its own right in another 10 years’ time,” he said.
“Glebe Hill Village will help ensure we have more infrastructure and services in place to meet the needs of this booming area.”
Modern features of the centre will include free wireless phone charging and Wi-Fi, real time air quality monitoring, smart bathrooms that monitor water usage, parcel lockers, recycling stations and EV chargers.
Previously, the proposal for the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week McDonald’s at the centre drew the ire of some local residents, who said the proposal would lead to an increase in crime.
Tipalea Partners said the store would employ more safety measures than any other in Hobart, with full CCTV coverage, car counters and number plate recognition at the entrances.
