Plans have been unveiled to transform an old television broadcast site in Northern Tasmania into an early learning and childcare centre.

A development application was lodged with the City of Launceston Council to convert the former WIN Television station, located at 132-136 Hobart Road, Kings Meadows, into a Discovery Early Learning Centres location.

According to its website, Discovery Early Learning Centres, a Tasmanian family-owned and operated organisation, offers long day care, preschool programs, and before-school and after-school care in 16 locations across the state.

Documents lodged by 6ty° state that the Kings Meadows site would include the expansion and refurbishment of the existing building by 125sq m, with 32 carparking spaces, three bus parking spaces, and an outdoor playground.

Developers said the Kings Meadows site would cater to 236 children from zero to school age, with 28 qualified carers and three administrative staff.

The Kings Meadows site was previously owned by Commonwealth Industrial Gasses until 1973, when it was bought and occupied by Tas Truck and Tractor.
From 1977 to 1993, the site was used as a workshop, depot and refuelling station.

After removing and decommissioning the underground petroleum storage systems on the site, Tas Truck and Tractor Proprietary Limited sold the land to Win Television in August, 1993.
The site was the location of the main office of Win Television in Northern Tasmania until 2016.

According to a traffic impact assessment taken as part of the development application, the proposed childcare service would increase traffic flow to the area by an estimated 500 vehicles per day.
