IMPROVEMENTS in boating safety have come a long way since the Tasmania Police Dive Club formed 65 years ago, according to the men that “saw it all”.

About 40 retired police divers gathered at the Bellerive Yacht Club on Friday for the 65-year reunion of the first Tasmanian Police Dive Squad.

Former squad member Ron Massie, 80, was joined by fellow former divers including Steve Williams, who said the anniversary provided a special time of reflection for members who encountered some tough missions.

“Many of us were involved with dives following the collapse of the Tasman Bridge in 1975 which of course was quite stressful,” Mr Williams said.

“The depth of the Derwent and the lack of visibility on the river floor were some of the stories we reflected on at Friday’s reunion.”

Mr Williams said he believed the legislation for compulsory life jackets on small powered boats can be thanked for the prevention of countless Tasmanian drownings.

The squad plans to meet again in five years.
