FORMER independent MLC for Murchison Tony Fletcher has been remembered as a “true gentleman” and a man of “great wisdom.”
Mr Fletcher served in the Upper House in the seat of Russell and then Murchison between 1981 and 2005 and was a former high school teacher.
Premier Peter Gutwein said Mr Fletcher was “one of nature’s true gentlemen.”
Former president of the Legislative Council, Jim Wilkinson, also paid tribute to Mr Fletcher for his many years of service to the community.
“Tony Fletcher was a man of great wisdom and bought to all debates a level of thought and consideration that is rarely seen in our parliament,” he said.
“He was an ‘old school’ conservative independent who fought for his constituents and never lost sight of the struggles his community faced, while balancing this with the best interests of Tasmania.
“I for one have a great deal to thank Tony for, as a mentor and as a friend he showed me and many of my contemporaries in the Chamber how to act, how to be a good member and most of all how to represent your electorate.”
