FIRE completely destroyed an historic weatherboard building on the extremity of the Willow Court site at New Norfolk this afternoon.

The old football clubhouse at the Willow Court oval -- just across the road from the town's Woolworths supermarket -- was completely engulfed in flames when the fire brigade arrived about 3.30pm.

A large crowd had gathered but there was little that could be done other than stop the fire from spreading into the long, dry grass surrounding the building.

Incident controller Colin Triffitt, from the New Norfolk Fire Brigade, said the blaze would be investigated. A fire watch is being maintained.

Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans said the building had been vacant for some time, but in the past had been put to a variety of community uses.
