A POPULAR beachside restaurant has started giving free and low-cost meals to locals in need.

Bombay on the Beach owner Deepak Attri said he was thankful Blackmans Bay customers were providing ongoing support to the business by continuing to buy their food via takeaway.

“We thought we’d offer free or low-cost food to students, the poor or people who are struggling,” Mr Attri said.

He said the initiative was receiving a great response from people online, offering help and donations.

“With their support, we can help more people,” he said.

“We have friends from the Kingborough community, from clubs to aged care, so people come to know that we are offering food to the old, vulnerable and needy people.”

He said although handing out food for next to nothing was not financially advantageous for the business, the COVID-19 pandemic was an important time to “fight together to help people”.
