Extreme weather conditions cause mass power outages across greater Hobart
Concerns remain for residents of greater Hobart experiencing power outages on the hottest recorded day in Hobart’s history.

TODAY’S extreme weather conditions have resulted in thousands of properties suffering power outages across the state.
Winds of more than 90km/h combined with fast-moving storms caused multiple fallen power lines in the state’s south.
The TasNetworks website showed power loss in areas of Hobart’s northern suburbs, the Huon and the state’s South.
Power outages are affecting some residents of Claremont, Austins Ferry, Granton, Franklin, Glen Huon, Judbury, Lonnavale, Ranelagh, Hastings, Ida Bay, Lune River, Strathblane and Southport.

A TasNetworks spokeswoman said the power outages were of special concern for residents who depend on electricity to operate water pumps and may need them to protect their homes against fire damage.
The immediate threat of severe #thunderstorms in #Tasmania has passed, but further thunderstorms are expected to redevelop across parts of Tasmania this evening.

Downed power lines in Blackmans Bay are also affecting more than 80 homes.
Additional outages in Carlton, Dodges Ferry, Forcett, Lewisham, Bridgewater, Brighton and Pontville are affecting more than 3000 homes, with crews inspecting the cause.
Long delays in power restoration are expected in many of the areas.

The mercury soared to over 40C in some parts of the state today, with Hobart setting a new record for the hottest December day since records began in the 1890s.
A severe fire warning remains in place for the state.
