'Keep Up Buddy!': Emperor Penguin Slides Alongside Expeditioners in Antarctica

BREATHTAKING photos captured at Antarctica showcase the southernmost continent’s natural beauty.

The images taken by photographer Todd Heery more than 100km west of Mawson Station on a six-day operational trip to Fold Island emperor penguin rookery.

“The aim of the trip was to maintain Colbeck and Ledingham huts and to clean up old fuel depots and emergency food caches along the way that were left from the dog-sledding and aviation days,” Mr Heery said.

“We aimed to take census photos at the penguin rookery as the area hasn’t been visited since 2018.”

Mr Heery said the photo showing jade iceberg and emperor penguin was taken before the penguin appeared to walk back to sea.

The iceberg jade is formed from mineral-rich seawater freezing to the underside of ice shelves.
