Tasmanian independent MP Rebekah Pentland has announced she has lost her baby boy and thanked “amazing” health professionals who cared for her.
Ms Pentland, 46, the member for Bass, announced in November she was expecting her fourth child at Easter.
However in a statement on Wednesday she said: “On Monday December 16 Alex and I said hello and sadly goodbye to our baby boy, Emmett James Pentland.
“It’s been an incredibly difficult time for my beautiful family who I thank for their unwavering love and support.”
Ms Pentland went on to praise Beyond The Rainbow, which she said was a local organisation, founded by Collette Butler, dedicated to supporting families who lose children through pregnancy, stillbirth and early infancy.
“Their thoughtful care packages offer Tasmanians comfort at the most vulnerable time,” she said.
“I’m in debt to them and will continue to support their work as an MP.”
Ms Pentland said health care workers “treated me with love and dignity at a highly stressful time”.
“Tasmania’s health system is often highlighted for its challenges, but my experience reminded me that our hospitals are full of dedicated, skilled, compassionate people who I can’t thank enough,” she said.
“We were truly blessed with an amazing elite team!
“I will take a step back from politics over the next couple of weeks to spend special time with my family over Christmas.”
