WHILE a $40,000 fine is a slap on the wrist for salmon company Huon Aquaculture, it sends a warning to the industry as a whole, say the Greens.

On Monday, Huon Aquaculture was fined $40,000 for dumping waste water containing chemicals and heavy metals onto the foreshore at Whale Point, Port Huon, on more than one occasion.

Greens MP Rosalie Woodruff said the Government needed to introduce tougher laws and create an independent regulator to safeguard the state’s waterways.

“There is widespread community concern about industrial-scale fish farming,” she said.

“The salmon industry has massively expanded across publicly owned waters around the state over the last decade, and they are long overdue to clean up their operations.

“The charges laid against Huon Aquaculture reflect an industry that’s relentlessly focused on expanding business, with marine environment protection just a roadblock to work around.”
