Direct flights to Asia are one step closer as the Hobart Airport runway upgrade gets underway.

The upgrade will make the runway fit for use by larger aircraft such as Boeing 787s and Airbus 350s, which will enable Hobart Airport to service long-distance freight and international flights.

“This runway will pave the way for non-stop international flights between Tasmania and

Asia and one-stop flights to Europe,” Hobart Airport CEO Norris Carter said.

“It’s a dream that is now fast becoming a reality, with work expected to be completed in

mid-2025 and the first wide-body aircraft to touch down soon after.”

Mr Carter said the $70m investment in the runway project and the $200 million terminal redevelopment were part of the plan to “build a better Hobart Airport and make tomorrow’s Tasmania possible”.

Mr Carter said the runway project would cost $70m and terminal redevelopment, $200m.

Downer Specialist Pavements and Projects general manager Simon Abrahams said the team was excited to be starting work on the project.

“Countless hours of meticulous pre-planning have culminated in today’s significant milestone,” he said.

He said Downer had collaborated extensively with the Hobart Airport team to ensure all contingencies were addressed to achieve the best possible outcome for the airport.

The Federal government committed $60m to the upgrades, and Hobart Airport will provide the remaining $70m.

Construction is set to be completed in May 2025.
