What do nurses, teachers and body builders have in common?

They are among the most common occupations that attend Diamond Class Pole and Fitness studio in North Hobart.

Teacher Ellen Curry didn’t grow up doing dance classes - she chose team sports for fitness.

During lockdown, she needed a new avenue and stumbled upon the studio.

“I never thought I would be a dancer,” Ms Curry said.

Since joining Diamond Class she has performed onstage, entered competitions, choreographed her own routines and even won the studios advanced division in the in-house competition last year.

She said the studio was inclusive of all levels and styles of dance.

“It’s such an awesome and welcoming environment,” Ms Curry said.

“You don’t feel embarrassed or scared to try new stuff - everyone is really supportive.”

On Saturday April 27 Ms Curry will perform in the 10th annual in-house “Shining Diamonds” competition dressed as 90s sitcom character The Fresh Prince of Bel-air.

Ms Curry said pole dancing wasn’t all about heels and being sexy, but was a fun way to develop fitness and explore self expression.

“People might not want to start and think “I’m not that kind of dancer” but you don’t need to be - you can find whatever you like to do and you can try new things,” she said.

“It’s kind of choose your own adventure.”

Studio owner, performer and teacher Bec Collins started the competition, a first in Tasmania, to create opportunities and pathways for Tasmanian pole dancers.

The competition begins Saturday at 7pm, at 61 Molle Street Hobart.
