A development application for the $130m revamp of UTAS Stadium has been lodged with the Launceston City Council.
The development application, which is available for public exhibition, features more than 960 pages of plans and reports related to the project.
The main works for the stadium upgrade include a brand-new centre-west stand, expanded western infill seating, and a revitalised eastern stand.
There will also be a new entry plaza for the southwest area of the UTAS Stadium.
Tasmanian Sports and Events Minister Nick Duigan said the stadium redevelopment would create jobs and provide economic growth.
“This revitalisation project ensures UTAS Stadium will continue to host world-class events, inspiring the next generation of sporting stars and reinforcing Tasmania’s status as a premier destination for major events and sporting excellence,” Mr Duigan said.
“It will also support the Tasmania Devils Football Club.
“Reaching this important milestone reinforces our government’s commitment to delivering a premier sports and entertainment venue for the region, enhancing the overall experience for visitors and the local community.”
Federal Regional Development and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the submission of the development application was a big step forward for the project.
“Upgrading existing facilities is the first step towards overhauling the stadium into a premier destination for fans and athletes,” Ms King said.
“We’re growing the economy and creating jobs in Northern Tasmania by investing in local sports infrastructure.
“This investment is part of our government’s commitment to creating a sustainable investment framework for growing cities such as Launceston.”
Launceston City Councillors will vote on the development application for the project at a later date.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Launceston and Northern Tasmania and will ensure UTAS Stadium remains a premiere sporting facility for our community for future generations,” Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said.
“The redevelopment aims to attract national sporting and entertainment events to Launceston, supporting the City of Launceston’s vision to make the city a premier business, retail and lifestyle hub.”
The federal and state governments will provide $65m each for the stadium upgrades.
“This development will make a significant difference to the northern Tasmanian sports and events community,” Stadiums Tasmania CEO James Avery said.
“It will result in a host of new events coming to UTAS Stadium in addition to securing the future of those community, sporting and entertainment events that have become a mainstay on the Launceston calendar.”
