More details have been released about plans for the JackJumpers high performance centre to be located in Kingborough, including a request for the council to grant a near 50-year lease.

Last month the JackJumpers were given the green light from the State Government to relocate it’s high performance centre, which was set to be built at Glenorchy’s Wilkinson’s Point, to Kingston.

Community courts would still be built in Glenorchy.

The state government’s proposal is for the high performance centre to be located within the Kingborough Sports Precinct.

The preferred site within the centre is currently being used by the Hobart Remote Controlled Car Club.

Two courts would be constructed for the facility, which the council says could be used by the community when the JackJumpers aren’t training.

“The JackJumpers currently train at the Kingborough Sports Centre and the decision to construct their high performance centre within the precinct is a positive one for the Kingborough community,” council officers said in a report.

“The potential opportunities to partner with the Kingborough Sports Centre and local schools are greatly enhanced by having the facility located with the precinct.”

The state government would fund the facility in its entirety, including support infrastructure such as parking.

The government would also take care of other costs, including insurance, maintenance and operations, ensuring the council is not responsible for depreciation.

In return the Kingborough Council would lease the land for 49 years, as requested by the government, at a “peppercorn” rate – that is, for much less than what the land is worth.

“The proposal has economic, social and community pride benefits for Kingborough and the development fits well with council’s strategic objectives for the Kingborough Sports Precinct,” the council officer said.

Because that site is considered public land, the council will need to publicly advertise a development application to lease it, before a decision can be made.
