Police crack down on speedsters

Thursday, March 31

Tasmania Police have issued over 30 fines to drivers in Western Tasmania as part of a crackdown on dangerous road behaviour over the last two days.

A 46-year-old man copped a $519 fine and lost five demerit points after being caught driving 34 kilometres over the speed limit near Kimberley.

Two 17-year-old P-platers were also caught driving over the speed limit in separate incidents.

One was intercepted on the Bass Highway at Turners Beach for driving 50 kilometres over the speed limit. His vehicle was clamped for 28 days, his license was disqualified for four months and he received a $994 fine.

The other teen was caught on the Bass Highway at Leith driving 40 kilometres over the speed limit. He was fined $735 and lost six demerit points.

In another incident an 18-year-old P-plater was nabbed going 44 kilometres over the speed limit on the Ridley Highway at Hampshire. He copped a $735 fine and lost six demerit points.

Senior Sergeant Darren Woolley said it was extremely disappointing to see that a large percentage of recent offences were committed by young, inexperienced drivers.

“Speeding continues to be one of the major factors leading to death and serious injury for drivers on Tasmanian roads,” said Sergeant Woolley.

“The evidence clearly shows provisional drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in a crash,”

“Remember that driving even a few kilometres over the speed limit is over. Over is Over.”
