PLANS for a boutique hotel which forms part of a $500m development in southern Tasmania are now open for public feedback.
Being developed in several stages, The Mills masterplan for New Norfolk includes more than 700 residential lots, a 100-bed private hospital, a childcare centre and 198 retirement homes.
The application for a planning permit for the proposed 4-star hotel is now being advertised by the Derwent Valley Council.
Project proponents, Noble Ventures, director Daniel Noble said the hotel would help the region “unlock its enormous tourism potential.”
“The Mills boutique hotel will offer a new destination for the region, also providing a personalised gateway to the Derwent Valley for intrastate, interstate and international visitors,” he said.
Mr Noble said The Mills hotel development would bring benefits to the local community in the form of job creation and tourist expenditure.
“Once operational, The Mills hotel is expected to generate an average of 42 FTE jobs in Tasmania, 33 of which will be in the Derwent Valley each year,” he said.
“By adding a new attraction to the area, we also hope to support existing local businesses by bringing more visitors to New Norfolk.
“The Mills hotel is an essential component of The Mills central precinct located approximately 500 metres from New Norfolk’s town centre, which will also include a private hospital, childcare centre, central community park, a retirement resort and a Tasmanian growers and makers commercial co-op precinct.”
Plans for the hospital were publicly advertised last month and the childcare centre was approved by council in September last year.
The planning report by interstate planning advisers Urbis showed the five storey hotel would also include conference and dining facilities plus rooftop leisure and recreation facilities, including a gymnasium and pool.
Public comment on the application is open until May 17.
