Colossal Biosciences answers questions

The company behind efforts to resurrect the extinct Tasmanian tiger has released a serious of information videos, in an effort to “dispel the myths” around the project.

Texas-based Colossal Biosciences has undertaken the ground breaking scientific feat, along with work to bring back the woolly mammoth and the dodo.

The company estimates the thylacine could be back as early as 2028.

Colossal has been working with a Tasmanian advisory committee to inform its research and gauge the attitudes of Tasmanians toward the project.

And they’ve now released a series of videos to answer common questions about the project.

“The episodes stretch from the very simple, like explaining what the thylacine was, and where it fit in, to the very complex including how a creature the size of a mouse will safely give birth to the very first de-extinct thylacine,” Tasmanian advisory committee chairperson and Derwent Valley mayor Michelle Dracoulis said.

“We created these videos to help to dispel some of the myths and scepticism, and answer questions that many people have about the thylacine and the de-extinction project.

“I think one of the most important messages from the series is explaining why this project is important for Tasmania.

Ms Dracoulis said it was especially important to emphasise the potential benefits of the project.

“In part, it’s about restoring our apex predator to the ecosystem and halting the inevitable trophic downgrading that’s occurring due to its absence,” she said.

“This also marks an incredible chance to show we can right past wrongs, and restore balance to our stunning island home.”

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary director Greg Irons is also on the committee.

“Tasmanians have so much love and curiosity for our wilderness and wildlife and that is especially the case when it comes to the Tassie Tiger,” Mr. Irons said.

“It’s important to be able to ask questions, to get answers and have all the facts as the scientists explore the possibility of bringing the thylacine back.

“It is also a great opportunity for all of us, young and old, to stop and reflect on the importance of valuing and protecting our wildlife for generations to come.”
