A PROPOSED shopping centre at Howrah could be in doubt, with Coles unable to confirm its commitment to the development.

Work on the Glebe Hill Village shopping centre was due to start next year.

“Coles is still considering its options in relation to this development,” a spokeswomen for the supermarket chain said.

Mayor Doug Chipman said he had heard nothing about any decision by Coles to abandon the project.

“The latest I heard was that they were keen to go ahead. The development has been approved and building set to start in the new year,’ Ald Chipman said.

The last update on the Glebe Hill Village Facebook page was November 22 when the council overwhelmingly approved the development application.

The complex, which Coles has said would house its best store in Tasmania, was due to open in 2018.
