THE warm weekend weather is fast becoming a memory as cold and wet conditions — and possibly even snow — set in across Tasmania.

At 7am yesterday, the temperature was 28.2C. At the same time this morning, it was 13.9C.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lizzie Donovan said there could be snow on Mt Wellington overnight tonight.

“If there is any shower activity happening, it should snow above 900m,” Ms Donovan said.

A cold front began passing over the state from the Southwest yesterday afternoon.

It is expected to bring rain, isolated thunderstorms and possible heavy falls up to 50mm to the eastern part of Tasmania today.

Up to 10mm is expected elsewhere, with showers expected to continue around Hobart until Monday.

An alert for slippery roads has also been issued this morning for parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East areas.

Hobart with reach 19C today and just 17C tomorrow, with the mercury jumping back up to 21C on Thursday and Friday.

The weekend’s heatwave reached a very abrupt end.

Hobart reached a minimum of 23.9C on Sunday night, with the Bureau of Meteorology revealing it was the warmest January night in 127 years of record keeping.

Saturday night also saw records broken for hottest minimum temperatures on the North and East coasts, with records also tumbling on Sunday night at Smithton, Low Head and Maria Island.

And while Hobart got to 36C on Sunday — its hottest day in four years — Campania claimed the state’s hottest maximum temperature for the weekend at 40C.
