CLARENCE City Council will seek to open up for general use land occupied by the Rosny Golf Course as soon as possible after the golf course’s lease expires on April 30.

The golf course is run by the YMCA. The land is subject to the council’s City Heart urban renewal project, which encompasses the Clarence CBD and surrounding areas of Kangaroo Bay and Bellerive.

At Monday night’s council meeting elected members approved the development of a plan for interim use of the golf course area and initiating an expression of interest process for concept plan development for the City Heart project.

The future of the course had been reconsidered by council due to falling patronage and the potential for the land to be used for other purposes.

The recommendation to council said an interim plan for the land “presents opportunities for council to invite the community to use the area for passive recreation activities other than golf. This will provide the opportunity for the community to re-engage with the land prior to consultation in relation to concept plans.”

The interim plan will aim to create low-cost improvements in the area, such as additional signage and pathways.

Alderman Beth Warren said the area should be opened to the whole community. “It gives us an opportunity to invite the broader community back into this space and get more of a feel for it,” she said.

Council is seeking community input on plans for the land that comprises the golf course, Charles Hand Park, Rosny Farm and Sheoak Point.
