CHEESE made at Fonterra’s Wynyard factory has again been recognised on the world stage picking up four gongs at the International Cheese and Dairy Awards in the UK.

The cheeses nudged out thousands of others at the 122-year-old awards.

Fonterra regional operations manager Tasmania Steve Taylor said the wins highlighted the hard work put in from paddock to plate to turn Tasmanian milk into fine cheese.

“Over 5000 cheeses were entered in this competition from more than 50 countries around the world. So to have won in this context really speaks to the quality of our cheese,” Mr Taylor said.

“This year we took home gold for Best Australian Cheddar for our tasty cheddar as well as Best Mild Cheddar cheese for our mild cheddar in the non-UK section.

“We also walked away with a silver medal for our mild cheddar and a bronze for our mature cheddar product”

Mr Taylor said cheesemaking was a team effort from the farmers’ milk which is turned into cheese at the company’s Wynyard site, through to the team who market and sell it.

Overall Fonterra walked away with seven wins for Australia including cheese from its Stanhope site in northern Victoria.
