High profile community activist Charlie Burton has become the second candidate to declare their intention to run for the Legislative Council division of Hobart.

Dr Burton joins former Tasmania Greens leader Cassy O’Connor as prospective candidates in the seat currently held by former Hobart Lord Mayor Rob Valentine, who is retiring at next year’s election.

Prominent businessman and alderman John Kelly is also considering throwing his hat in the ring, in what is expected to be a crowded field.

Writing in today’s talking point section, the long-time TasCOSS staffer underlined the importance of independents in the state’s Upper House.

“Tasmania needs independent members of the Legislative Council so our decisions and laws build a fairer Tasmania for everyone’s benefit, not just the interests of political parties and wealthy donors seeking political favours,” Dr Burton writes.

“As an independent member for Hobart, I would commit to proposing and supporting solutions that address the real needs of Tasmanians – such as making sure everyone has a safe and affordable roof over their head, enough food on the table, and access to affordable and timely healthcare – while also ensuring future generations inherit a Tasmania that boasts a thriving economy, healthy environment, and a rich social and cultural life.”

Six candidates stood at the 2018 election in Hobart, which has been held by Mr Valentine since 2012.

At the 2018 election, Mr Valentine, an independent, received 61 per cent of the vote after the distribution of preferences, ahead of fellow independent Richard Griggs.

Dr Burton said a long career of public service was excellent preparation for a prospective Legislative councillor.

“I have 30 years’ experience delivering policy advice to decision makers in Canberra and Tasmania.”

“With a strong track record of advocating for laws and policies that benefit all Tasmanians, my focus will be addressing challenges including the rising cost of living, housing, and healthcare, and ensuring future generations inherit a Tasmania that boasts a thriving economy, healthy environment, and a rich cultural life.”
