CHRISTIANS have gathered in churches around Tasmania to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Hundreds attended Easter Sunday services at Hobart’s St David’s Anglican cathedral and St Mary’s Catholic cathedral.
Catholic Archbishop Julian Porteous told the more than 300 people gathered at St Mary’s that the risen Lord was with them.
“People sometimes in the difficulties and struggles of their life aren’t aware that Christ the risen Lord is with them and I was taking some examples of that from the scriptures to encourage people to believe that the Lord has risen and that he accompanies us and walks with us on our journey during life and he’s there to be that inspiration and encouragement to us,” Archbishop Porteous said.
He said every human life had its moments of darkness and suffering.
“Sometimes people get burdened down … they can’t see the light when it comes, see the light that’s there,” Archbishop Porteous said.
“In the midst of human life, in the midst of suffering, there is hope because Christ has risen.”
Archbishop Porteous said the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris brought home the story of death and resurrection.
“Already people are saying we must restore this magnificent monument of Christianity, so this sense that even when things go wrong, and go terribly wrong, we want to rebuild, we want to move forward, we want to rise up again so I think Notre-Dame could be an expression of that Easter confidence that we’re not going to be destroyed by things that go wrong.”
