Got an interstate mate keen for a new gig as a wombat walker? 

Or perhaps wine whisperer or sauna stoker would be more their speed. 

These are some of the delightfully Tasmanian odd jobs that feature in the state’s latest Off Season winter tourism campaign, which stars Australian comedian Josh Thomas.

Tourism Tasmania acting chief executive Vanessa Pinto said Tasmanian winters were the perfect chance for visitors to escape the routine of everyday life and engage in a unique experience.

“These Odd Job volunteering experiences are fun, light-hearted opportunities that respond to issues of work-life balance and burnout that many Australians are feeling,” Ms Pinto said.

“The tongue-in-cheek initiative is exactly what Tasmania has become known for in campaigns, and we know it is effective because it creates conversations about the importance of taking a break this winter and building awareness that Tasmania’s Off Season is the perfect space to

do that.”

While the campaign is light-hearted, the roles – which include cave conductor, oyster organiser, and truffle snuffler – are real.

Interested Australians are invited to apply for one of the 10 Odd Jobs through the Discover Tasmania website from now until 8 July.

Successful applicants will have their travel expenses covered, and will receive Tasmanian produce or goods hand-picked by their Odd Job host in recognition of their toil.

Lynne Wilton from Little Beach Glamping Retreat north of Bicheno is looking forward to hosting a Sauna Stoker to help keep her guests warm and cosy.

“We launched here in December 2021, and after putting in a hot tub to boost our winter experience, we also installed a sauna,” she said.

“Whenever I take people down to the sauna, I let them go first because the view is stunning.

“Because everything about our side is low-emission and about caring for the environment, we went with a woodfire heater for the sauna.

“I think the successful applicant will be an outdoors type, who’s relatively fit, and is probably a bit of a Wim Hof follower.

“And I see they probably have a bit of a wicked sense of humour too.”
