AN East Coast vineyard owner has proposed a $1.2 million expansion of their popular cellar door and food outlets.
In December 2012, Victorian family wine company Brown Brothers opened the Devil’s Corner cellar door outlet at Apslawn, halfway between Swansea and Bicheno, overlooking Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards.
The company has now lodged a development application with the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council for an expansion, which would see the existing cellar door and food spaces almost double in size.
Application documents written in January by project architect Peter Walker of Hobart firm Cumulus Studio state the extension was sought to better cater to current demand the then forecast growth over the coming years.
“The cellar door has been highly successful and current visitor numbers to site on peak days mean the development is not able to adequately accommodate existing visitor numbers, creating a poor visitor experience,” Mr Walker writes.
“The proposed expansion will reinforce the site as a must-see visitor experience for the East Coast and maintain a high quality visitor experience as visitor numbers increase.
“The new work has been designed to be in-keeping with the existing development, the character of the rural area and with the intent of the planning scheme.”
Representations for and against the proposal can be made until May 20.
