BRIGHTON Council says it will keep its latest rate rise in line with inflation for the 24th year in a row.

The rate increase for the 2019-20 financial year, expected to be formally set at the council’s June meeting, will amount to 2.1 per cent, or $18 a year for all households.

Mayor Tony Foster said the council recognised the cost of living pressures on ratepayers and their capacity to pay.

“Like our ratepayers, council must live within its means,” Cr Foster said.

“Because of our administrative efficiency, shared service initiatives and other earnings, we are able to continue to enhance our services and facilities for the community. This year’s general rate rise equates to just $1.50 a month or 35c a week for all households.”

Cr Foster said despite holding down rate increases, Brighton would still undertake a range of community improvement projects in the coming year, including roadworks and public facilities’ improvements.
