POPULAR Hobart breakfast radio host Brian ‘Spoonman’ Carlton has stepped down from his morning slot citing poor health.
Fill in presenter Phil Bradley made the announcement live on air Wednesday morning, reading from a note to all Tasmanian SCA staff on Tuesday night.
“Triple M Hobart today confirmed that Breakfast host Brian ‘Spoonman’ Carlton has left the station,” he said.
SCA Executive General Manager for Victoria and Tasmania, Ally Bradley thanked Carlton for his commitment to the stations’ listeners through Triple M Hobart.
“The last couple of years have been a particularly challenging time and I know he has given it his all,” she said.
A statement from Carlton, read on air by Bradley, said he was taking an “extended break” from all work for health reasons.
“What a privilege it has been to broadcast to the people of my favourite city on Triple M, despite these very tough times,” he said.
The multi-award winning presenter had been broadcasting for more than 30 years and was known as a political and at times controversial figure in the industry.
Starting out his career in radio at just 19-years-old, Carlton worked behind the scenes before becoming the youngest News Talk host on Sydney’s 2UE in 1990 which rated number one that year.
In 2015 the Sydneysider permanently relocated to Tasmania and became the host of Grant Broadcaster’s Tasmania Talks in Northern Tasmania covering Launceston, Devonport, Burnie, Queenstown and Scottsdale.
Despite his solid audience and high ratings in regional Tasmania he was reportedly never offered a timeslot on 7HOFM in Hobart.
In a dramatic end to his job at the network, Carlton was reportedly pulled off air mid shift one morning by management after delivering a ‘rant’ just days after resigning in 2019, forcing the cancellation of the show that day.
Although comments made to the media at the time claimed that Carlton left the station for personal reasons he ended up moving to Triple M, replacing long-running breakfast host Dave Noonan later that year.
Carlton’s moniker “The Spoonman” was inspired by the Sound Garden song after he was told his own name was too boring.
