A man who allegedly used Snapchat to groom and later abuse teenage girls has been ordered to make a plea in his case – after repeatedly struggling to find a lawyer.

Bagdad resident Bradley Graham Paul Cate, 23, recently appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court where it was heard he had approached three different legal services and had been unsuccessful in obtaining a lawyer.

Among Cate’s charges include three counts of grooming with intent to procure a child or young person for sexual abuse, and two counts of indecent act with a child or young person.

He is also charged with three counts of penetrative sexual abuse of a child or young person, and a count of rape.

Court documents allege that Cate groomed three teenage girls through photo sharing application Snapchat on dates spanning July 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023.

He is alleged to have groomed three girls before later going on to sexually abuse two of them.

The documents state that one of the girls who was the subject of the unlawful sexual intercourse charge was under the age of 17.

A duty lawyer told the court that referral documents had been provided to Cate so he could approach “different agencies” in the hopes that he would have representation at his next appearance.

They asked Cate’s matter be adjourned without plea until July, noting that some of the matters were “quite serious”.

Cate is also facing charges of supplying cannabis and alcohol to one of the girls.

In addition, he is charged with eight counts of driving while suspended on various dates in 2022, including October 15, November 8, November 9, November 21, December 23 and 24, December 30 and January 10 – all along the Southern Outlet at Kingston.

The adjournment was granted, but Cate was told that he must enter a plea on his next court date.
