Book Week 2023 Tasmania: Julian Latham’s infectious love of Harry Potter leads to outfit inspiration

Schools across Tasmania and Australia will become imaginariums of limitless possibility, as the beloved annual Children’s Book Week rolls into town. For this cute seven-year-old from Hobart, his costume was an easy pick for a very special reason.

A scar just like the world’s most famous wizard led to 7-year-old Julian Latham falling in love with the Harry Potter series – and emulating the titular hero for Book Week 2023.

A fall for Julian earlier in the year meant a tight, pink scar on his forehead – something his Year 1 classmates said reminded them exactly of Harry Potter.

His fascination with the comparison and name led to him reading the stories with his mother Rose and an obsession began.

Children’s Book Week 2023, starting Monday, provides the perfect opportunity to finally dress up in Hogwarts robes and carry a wand like Potter in his school’s Book Week parade.

“He says it’s the best day of the year,” mother Rose said.

“A lot of kids enjoy the opportunity to dress up and become their characters.

“Teachers are getting on-board now too more than ever.”

President of the Tasmanian Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, Steve Martin, said that Children’s Book Week is the time to bring children and books together.

“During this time our schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators,” Mr Martin said.

“This week and every week after I encourage parents, grandparents, siblings, carers and friends to grab a book to read, grow and inspire with their children.

“Reading books together with your children is one of the best investment you will ever make.”

The focus of this year’s Book Week will be on the theme of “Read, Grow, Inspire,” which hopes to highlight the “unlimited scope” imagination has for growth and infinite possibility, Mr Martin said.
