A shack town by the beachside in North-West Tasmania is set to undergo a significant transformation.

Construction will begin on the Boat Harbour Beach Master Plan project on November 5.

The $11.7m project includes a new surf life saving club and community centre built along with improvements to carparks, roads, public amenities and the landscape around the foreshore area.

The Commonwealth has provided $4.5m for the project, the Tasmanian government contributed $2.7m, and the Waratah-Wynyard Council forked out the remaining $5.5m.

Mayor Mary Duniam said she was excited about the upcoming development.

“This project is the culmination of years of collaborative effort between council, the Boat Harbour Surf Life Saving Club, local businesses and our dedicated community members,” Ms Duniam said.

“We have listened carefully to the needs and aspirations of our residents to ensure that the design is both environmentally conscious and reflective of our local history and unique coastal character.

“This Master Plan reflects the voices of Boat Harbour Beach residents, capturing their vision for a sensitive design that preserves the area’s natural beauty and strengthens our community bonds.”

Labor Senator Anne Urquhart said she was proud that her government was able to support the project.

“Boat Harbour is one of the most beautiful beaches in Tasmania and is a beacon for tourists,” Senator Urquhart said.

“The new Surf Life Saving Club, Café and public spaces will take Boat Harbour to the next level.

“This project improves amenities for local residents and provides a place for community activities.

“It will also mean that Boat Harbour can warmly welcome the many people who visit this iconic Tasmanian location each year.”

Boat Harbour Beach Surf Life Saving Club (BHBSLSC) President Annie Triffett said she was looking forward to gaining a new-look headquarters.

“The BHBSLSC is very appreciative of the efforts and direction that the Waratah-Wynyard Council has taken in bringing this to fruition,” Ms Triffett said.

“We look forward to having this significant community asset being completed, allowing us to continue to supply our Surf Life Saving patrols and to bring our local community into this community space.”

The master plan for Boat Harbour Beach is expected to take a year to complete.
