A 24-year-old Lenah Valley man has been granted bail after appearing in court over a Salamanca Place assault which left another young man in an induced coma.

Benjamin Dodge Collings appeared before Magistrate Reg Marron on Wednesday morning on one count of assault, along with stating a false name and address, resisting a police officer and unrelated driving charges.

Mr Collings did not enter a plea and was bailed to reappear on December 4.

A statement from Tasmania Police said the alleged assault happened at Salamanca Place around 4.20am on Sunday.

A man in his 20s received serious but non-life threatening head injuries, police said.

An update provided by the Health Department on Wednesday afternoon said the injured man was in a serious but stable condition.

A Tasmanian 24-year-old has appeared in court for the first time since police allege he bashed a man at Salamanca Place so severely the complainant was left in a coma.

Tasmania Police on Sunday said they had taken a Lenah Valley man, 24, into custody over a “serious assault” in Salamanca during the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Police and emergency services were called to Salamanca Place about 4.20am after a man in his 20s was seriously assaulted,” the statement read.

“The victim was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious but what are believed to be non-life threatening head injuries.”

On Monday at about 12.30pm, Benjamin Dodge Collings appeared before Magistrate Robert Webster on a single count of assault, an indictable offence that will require elevation to the Supreme Court.

It carries a maximum penalty of 21 years’ jail.

Mr Collings, who was supported by his father in court, made an application for bail.

After hearing all submissions, Magistrate Robert Webster remanded Mr Collings in custody until Wednesday, when the defendant will appear on an unrelated charge of driving while exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit.

On Monday afternoon, Tasmania Police provided an update on the complainant’s condition.

“The person remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition,” a spokeswoman said.

The Mercury understands the complainants remains in a medically induced coma, having undergone surgery to relieve pressure on their brain.
