STUDENTS at one of Australia’s oldest schools will take a trip back in time on Wednesday when they open a time capsule from 1993.
Bellerive Primary School captains Jasper Gye and Anais Fitzpatrick have the honour of finding out what it was like for their predecessors in the ’90s.
The school, which opened in 1843, has been celebrating its 175th birthday this year.
Grade 6 student Anais said they weren’t sure what they would find in the capsule.
“Maybe some old school work, some photos, maybe the cane, you never know,” she said. “We’ve heard a lot of stories [this week] about the cane and different aspects of the school.”
Principal Steven Hay said students had learnt about Bellerive Primary during class history lessons.
He said the celebrations would conclude on December 19, with the refilling of the time capsule to be opened in 2043 on the 200th anniversary.
“It will include work from this year, a 2019-20 calender, the school history book, the Mercury from November 7 and a school newsletter,” Mr Hay said.
He said all 490 students would also write a letter to their future self.
