A magnificent old church dating back to the 1840s and since converted into a striking residential property has officially been put on the market.

Built from stone circa 1842, the Bagdad Chapel at 2 Chauncy Vale Rd became part of the Uniting Church in 1977, before being deconsecrated in 2006.

Kay and Denis Whitehouse bought the property 15 years ago and have lovingly restored and renovated it, transforming it into an impressive three-bedroom home.

“We decided to sell as we were getting older and wanted to downsize,” Ms Whitehouse said.

“It’s peaceful and tranquil with plenty of space around us with great neighbours.”

Attached to the property is a cemetery with 61 graves. The remains of more than 100 people are buried there.

Ms Whitehouse said the new owner would be required to maintain the lawns surrounding the graveyard.

Located about 30 minutes from Hobart, the Bagdad property contains two mezzanine-style bedrooms, plus a master bedroom.

The Whitehouses have retained some of the original features of the church, including the pulpit, organ, flower stands, light fittings, glass windows and stained-glass glazing depicting religious scenes.

The former Sunday school has been converted into a one-bedroom unit at the back of the property.

“We are proud of the fact that we achieved so much and had many compliments,” Ms Whitehouse said.

“We saw that the church was for sale 15 years ago and we always wanted to restore and renovate a property of interest, and because we could we did.”

The couple is asking for offers over $550,000.

Leesa Harrison, of Harcourts Signature Northern Suburbs, described the renovation the Whitehouses had undertaken as “amazing”.

“They’ve just really transformed the former church into an outstanding unique residence,” she said.

“In the past, our agency has sold former churches that have been converted to residences and there’s always a lot of interest around – that out-of-the-box listing that is just something different that sparks attention.”
