LITTLE Myrtle decided to pop out and say hello to the world just days before Mother’s Day after spending seven months inside mum’s pouch at Zoodoo.
The wide-eyed wombat joey has been happily waddling around with first-time mother Panda ever since.
Zoodoo general manager Nick Atchison said Myrtle was the fifth common wombat to be bred at the Tea Tree animal haven.
“Many common wombats enter human care as orphans as a result of the mother being hit by a car,” he said.
“These orphans are usually hand-reared by zoos and carers networks.
“However, common wombats are very rarely bred in zoos in Australia and this makes Myrtle a very special girl.”
The cute new baby weighed just under 2kg and can be spotted wondering around with Panda, a hand raised wombat who has paid visits to Zoodoo tour guides in between naps with Myrtle always close by.
Zoodoo native species team leader Hayley Mutton said the success breeding Myrtle could lead to further wombat husbandry potential for the common hairy-nosed wombat species.
“We are very excited to watch Myrtle grow at Zoodoo and see where her future may lead as an ambassador for her species,” she said.
To take a peak at the newborn, attend Zoodoo’s Native Walks between 9am and 5pm.
