A new apartment block with 56 homes could be built on Hobart’s Barrack Street, with plans revealed for the site of an old car showroom.
At 20 Barrack Street, it’s proposed a mixed use complex be built, containing the new homes, along with space for three commercial tenancies on the ground floor.
A development application for the build was recently lodged with the Hobart City Council.
The site fronts onto Barrack St, Collins Street and Macquarie Street, and a Hyandai Motors showroom can be seen on the Collins Street side.
“The site and existing building was previously used as the Motors Showroom, but has been vacant for a number of years,” Irene Inc planners said in a planning report.
“The lower portions of the site along Barrack Street are still utilised for vehicle servicing, including an existing car showroom fronting Collins Street.”
Excluding the basement levels, the building would be six storeys high and have a maximum height of 26.5 metres.
All of the apartments would situated above the ground level, including 14 one-bedroom apartments, 34 two-bedroom apartments and eight three-bedroom apartments.
The three-bedroom apartments would be on the top floor of the complex.
“All apartments have private balconies providing residents with private outdoor amenity space, along with access to two communal areas on the roof, each comprising approximately 400m2,” planners said.
“The communal areas will provide space for entertaining, including a covered area with barbecue facilities and landscaping (including options for communal gardens).
“Due to the size of the communal area, outdoor recreational activities can also be undertaken.”
The proposal also includes 64 carparking spaces, one for each apartment and an additional nine to service the commercial tenancies on the ground floor.
The carpark would be accessible via Macquarie Street.
Some of the buildings surrounding the proposed development are on heritage listed, and the site is next to a heritage precinct which runs along the Hobart Rivulet.
The plans will be open for public comment until March 18.
