THE must-have gadget of 2015 will have a Tasmanian connection when it launches globally next month.

Hobart-based tech company Savage Interactive has had it’s internationally renowned mobile app Procreate selected as a launch app when the highly anticipated Apple Watch hits stores.

The app has taken the world by storm since its release in 2011 and allows its users to paint or draw photorealistic pictures on their iPads or iPhones.

Co-founder and CEO of Savage Interactive James Cuda says the watch version of the app was a big step forward for the company.

“Procreate Pocket, together with the Apple Watch, will reinvent this concept into something new – the digital palette,” Mr Cuda said. “You’ll be actually be wearing your digital paint colours and tools.”

The app will allow users to work in conjunction with their iPhone and allows artists to arrange paint and tools in their hand as they craft their illustrations.

Mr Cuda and his team of seven employees work from a small Old Beach house and have avoided the temptation of taking their company to the lucrative Silicon Valley in the United States.

“All the members of Savage call Tasmania home,” he said. “We’ve made a very deliberate decision to stay in Tasmania, and this has had a huge, positive impact on the way Procreate is made and the way our company works.”

The app was awarded the prestigious Apple Design Award in 2013 and went viral when a UK artist used his finger to create a lifelike image of actor Morgan Freeman.
