Victoria records 23rd death and 216 new coronavirus cases

A TASMANIAN woman has been charged after allegedly failing to self-isolate days after arriving in the state from Victoria.

Tasmania Police said officers arrested a 20-year-old greater Hobart woman on Friday evening for allegedly breaching COVID-19 restrictions.

She is accused of providing false details to biosecurity staff upon her arrival in the state and failing to self-isolate for the past several days.

It comes as charges were on Friday laid against a 22-year-old Ulverstone man who allegedly dodged quarantine requirements after returning from Victoria.

Police said the 20-year-old woman was interviewed and charged with three counts of failing to comply with the lawful requirement or direction of an emergency management worker. She was also charged with knowingly providing false or misleading information to an emergency management worker.

We make no apologies for proceeding against anyone who does not believe the restrictions apply to them and place others at risk through their actions – Inspector Troy Morrisby

After being interviewed, the female was bailed with strict conditions and will be subject to regular checks by Tasmania Police, Inspector Troy Morrisby said.

Insp Morrisby said the woman had not displayed symptoms of COVID-19 and said there was no information to suggest she had been exposed to any confirmed cases prior to her return to Tasmania.

Coronavirus cases to double every five days in Victoria

He said police would continue to undertake regular checks on returning travellers to ensure they comply with the restrictions that are in place.

“Residents and businesses have done an outstanding job over the past several months that has resulted in many restrictions being eased. However, returning travellers failing to comply with the current restrictions are a significant threat to the wider community and present the most likely avenue of COVID-19 returning,” he said.

“To date, Tasmania Police has adopted a commonsense approach to enforcement and has worked with the public to minimise the risk of further outbreaks.

“Our officers will continue to monitor people who are required to self-isolate at home and we make no apologies for proceeding against anyone who does not believe the restrictions apply to them and place others at risk through their actions.”

Premier Peter Gutwein said Tasmanians needed to toughen up on following the rules.

“We all need to strengthen our resolve, to remain vigilant and disciplined so that we keep each other safe and secure,” he said.

“We know this disease is deadly, and Tasmanians need to continue to follow the rules. If you don’t you can expect the full force of the law to be exercised.

“We need to continue to make decisions based on public health advice to keep people safe from a second wave, to protect our healthcare workers, to protect our businesses and to protect our way of life.”

Anyone who is aware of a returning traveller who is breaching current restrictions should contact police on 131 444.
