IT was fun in the sun for thousands of Tasmanians who turned out at Australia Day events across the state on Sunday.

Kingborough Council’s A Day on the Beach activities drew hundreds to the annual event which saw a raft of festivities on offer including beach volleyball, ocean swims, sailing and tug-o-war.

Kingborough Mayor Dean Winter said it was pleasing to see a strong community turnout in sunny but gusty weather.

“It’s always a great event. Our council is really proud to support the volunteers who make it happen,” he said.

“The wind made things a little tricky this year, but despite that it was another great turnout. Thanks to everyone for making it a success.”

AUSTRALIA DAY IN TASSIE

Australia Day celebrations were also in full-swing at Sandy’s Bay’s Long Beach for the 172nd Sandy Bay Regatta.

Sandy Bay Regatta Junior Committee member Chloe Pringle-Jones, 12, said the group had a busy day organising fun-filled activities for kids.

“We hung out at the kids corner and our role was to make sure they had a fun time while here,” she said.

THIRTY-TWO TASMANIANS LISTED IN AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS

“There was plenty to choose from for kids including playdough, a sandpit hiding lollies for a treasure hunt as well as face painting, nail polish and fake tattoos.”

Anthea Kantar, 11, said she had a busy day helping serve customers alongside her mum and dad at their family’s food van.
