The Tasmanian community is in mourning today following the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl in a 4x4 crash on a private property yesterday afternoon.

Mount Stuart teen Jocelyn Daguman is being remembered as a “beautiful girl” who loved animals and had aspirations of being a veterinarian before she tragically lost her life.

Miss Daguman was behind the wheel of a Polaris 4x4 Ranger on a property on Boyer Rd at Bridgewater when she lost control causing the vehicle to tip over.

Police arrived at the scene of the crash about 3pm.

It is believed paramedics gave Miss Daguman CPR repeatedly on the scene before the young driver was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

A 14-year-old female passenger also sustained minor injuries.

Speaking to the Mercury, Miss Daguman’s mother Sonia Van Den Heuvel said the family were struggling to come to terms with the loss of their much loved daughter.

“She was heavily loved by all of her family and friends,” Miss Van Den Heuvel said.

“I’ve never seen anyone care for animals as much as she did.”

Miss Daguman had just started Year 9 at Taroona High School and leaves behind three siblings aged 11, 18 and 21.

A cousin of the deceased, Skye Berry said she was still coming to terms with the tragic news.

“It’s so crazy, she was only fourteen,” she said.

On the circumstances of Miss Daguman’s death, Miss Berry said “I wish I could raise more awareness for people to wear helmets when they’re riding.”

A coronial inquest into the death of seven ATV fatalities in Tasmania which began in 2016 says the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries strongly support the Coroner’s recommendation that helmets be mandatory.

In the Tasmanian inquest, the Coroner found that 4 of the 7 deaths would not have occurred if the rider had been wearing a properly secured helmet.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise funds to support the family of Miss Daguman.
