A Hobart venue, which was taken on by new owners and rebranded after it was plagued by allegations on social media could extend its hours until 5am everyday.
201 Club Tasmania opened as Temple Nightclub in April this year, with a ritzy $2m transformation of its venue on Liverpool Street in Hobart.
But within days of opening, the venue was the subject of series of allegations on social media, prompting the owners to publicly refute claims of criminal convictions.
Next came a change in ownership for the nightclub, which was relaunched in May, after a “challenging” few months after opening.
The venue also began operating a cafe and recently relaunched as 201 Club Tasmania.
It’s now lodged an application with the Hobart City Council to extend its hours to operate from 7am to 5am everyday.
The current hours are from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 11pm, extending to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
In its application the owners said it did not mean they would be operating until 5am everyday.
“We intend to operate the venue 11am – 11pm Thursday & Sunday and 11am – 3am Friday & Saturday,” the owners said in their application.
“The business operates as a cafe until 8pm and then turns into a live music venue.
“These times are guidelines for the time being and the likelihood of trading past these times regularly is unlikely, however, we would feel more comfortable knowing we can trade if the increased revenue is there to support our staff as well as if we have any functions or events outside of these times.”
The owners said they did not believe extending the hours would impact on surrounding businesses and other operations.
An assessment of the noise impacts was undertaken of the loudspeaker system in and around 201 Club, which predicted noise would “exceed the criteria specified”.
To mitigate this, it’s recommended the business upgrade its entry to a thicker front door, create and airlock and upgrade the glazing on the facade.
“Historically, the venue has often closed earlier than 3:00am, particularly on Friday nights where patronage does not warrant the extended hours,” the assessment said.
“The surrounding entertainment area has other venues hosting a loudspeaker system of similar or greater capacity, such as the Odeon Theatre, Altar, the Grand Poobah and the Hanging Garden, all of which are within 200m of site.”
